Barnwood Park School

Renishaw Workshop

With National Apprenticeship Week coming up soon (9-15 February), we were delighted to welcome Renishaw, a leading global engineering company, into school to deliver an engaging two-hour Year 10 electronics workshop.

Throughout the session, students learnt about the wide range of innovative products Renishaw designs and manufactures, including precision measurement equipment, CNC machine probes, metal additive manufacturing (3D printing) systems, and medical and dental technologies. The engineers also spoke about the many apprenticeship opportunities available, with a particular focus on GET in Barnwood, Gloucester, which is within walking distance of the school—an exciting and realistic option for our students.

The lesson was highly practical, with students successfully building magnetic spinners and constructing an electronic dice circuit. One student even completed the circuit faster than the Renishaw engineers themselves when they had a go—an impressive achievement!

Students also heard first-hand from one of the engineers about his own journey into Renishaw through an apprenticeship pathway, which sparked interest among several students who felt this could be a route they would like to pursue. To finish, students explored examples of Renishaw’s 3D-printed plastic and metal prototypes, including both moving and non-moving parts, giving them a real insight into modern engineering and manufacturing.

It was an inspiring and informative session that brought engineering careers to life.
